Dear Freshman Students, Parents and Guardians:
As freshman students experience several "firsts" during this critical first year of high school, the same holds true for their parents and guardians. As you adjust to this new experience, we are writing to share some important resources. It is our hope that the information in this packet will assist in making the first year in high school a positive and successful experience for everyone.
To start, we would like to update you on how the Counseling Department will play a critical role in supporting students directly. We will be working on a variety of initiatives to ease students' transitions from elementary to high school. We will support students academically, personally and socially as they encounter the new expectations, challenges, rigor and excitement of attending a premiere college prep high school.
To this end, we will work with students in three major capacities:
1. Through individual meetings aimed at identifying personal concerns, goals and an academic plan of action.
2. Through large group counseling lessons – what we call “Freshman Seminar” – addressing issues such as interpersonal communication skills, stress management, academic help-seeking, organization skills, college and career planning, and so forth.
3. Through the management, advisement and guidance of our Eagle Leaders who will serve as peer mentors to all freshmen.
At the bottom of this page, you will find the following materials to help address some of the issues unique to freshman families:
We see ourselves as partners in helping freshman students succeed this year at Jones. We welcome your feedback, concerns, comments, and suggestions. Feel free to reach out!
